It’s time nurses get the power back!
As a nurse for over 25 years, I have been part of many aspects of nursing – ASN, BSN, NP, full-time, part-time, weekend program, telemetry, oncology, neonatology and education. Through it all, one thing has remained constant – nurses are overstretched, undervalued, and underappreciated day in and day out. Sadly, the situation has only worsened with time, and rates of anxiety, depression, and even suicide among the nursing community continue to grow.
My heart grew heavy as I watched superhero mentality take a toll on nurses, making them believe that they must always tough it out, bare the weight of the job, and keep their struggles to themselves. But the truth is, nurses are not superheroes! We are human beings, doing one of the most human jobs there is. As I witnessed my fellow nurses and nurse practitioners suffer in silence, I realized that lip service about nursing burnout was not enough – real changes were necessary to protect nurses from harm. We can no longer wait for someone else to fix the problem. We need to take care of ourselves, because the work environment has become increasingly toxic. Staffing ratios have worsened, and the bottom line has become the top priority, turning nurses into casualties of this healthcare crisis.
Nurses Healing Nurses Was Born!
Tired of the same ole institutional crap I had dealt with for decades, I decided to first free myself by opening my own private practice. Finally, I had a boss who was supportive and genuinely invested in my personal growth (hint- it was me!!!). As time went on, more and more of my clients were nurses and I could see firsthand the devastation of a system built to be punitive vs supportive of our largest group of healthcare workers.
In response, I founded Nurses Healing Nurses to provide a safe space for nurses to come together and support one another because no one understands a nurse like a nurse. NHN is here to help you create the life you want, to open your eyes to the incredible possibilities that await you, and to help you overcome whatever is holding you back. Every nurse deserves to experience joy and fulfillment in their career and personal life, and I am committed to doing everything in my power to help make that a reality.
